Every month, the same cloud bill. And every month, the same question: wouldn't having my own server pay off? If you run a business in Málaga, here is the honest answer: when yes, when no, and the middle ground almost nobody tells you about.
Let's start with the uncomfortable part: the cloud wins for tiny stuff
If all you need is storing a few files, having email and little else, the public cloud wins without discussion: zero investment, zero maintenance and you pay pennies. And we say this as people who build servers for a living: for truly tiny tasks, you don't need your own server. Selling you one would mean selling you something you don't need, and that's not how we work.
Where your own server wins by a mile: the money
The cloud is paid by usage and by month: storage, users, traffic, backups... it all adds up. Past a certain volume (a handful of workstations, daily backups, a management app), two or three years of cloud fees equal an already paid-off own server. And once amortised, the server is yours: no monthly bill going up every January, no plan changing its terms without warning.
Where it also wins: your data, at your place
This is the argument that carries most weight for consultancies, clinics and offices: with your own server, your clients' data sits in your office, encrypted and under your control, not in a data centre in another country with terms that change whenever they feel like it. To truly comply with the GDPR (knowing where the data is, who accesses it and which backups you have), nothing beats holding it yourself. Our business server service is designed exactly like that: controlled access, a configured and documented backup system, and Linux as a secure foundation.
The middle ground: the VPS
Neither generic cloud nor a machine in your office? There is a middle ground: a VPS, a private virtual server running Linux with a fixed monthly fee. No upfront investment, scalable as you grow, and your data kept separate from other customers'. For many businesses in Málaga it is the sensible first step before a physical server, and we manage those too.
The downsides, with no small print
Your own server demands upfront investment, uses electricity and needs maintenance and backups that someone actually checks: a server left to its own fate is worse than the cloud. That checking is on you; we'll show you how. That's why a server isn't bought and forgotten: it is contracted with someone who looks after it.
